A Perfect Stay at Casa Yuma -Puerto Escondido's Hidden Gem

Perfect beach rotting location

I almost don’t want to write this post because I want to keep this place to myself. The resort isn’t even a year old, but our stay there was absolutely perfect from beginning to end. Thank god I found this place on Airbnb (and then booked directly on their website to save money – there’s a travel hack for ya!!)

i do not know how to use my camera but every pic of this place ended up amazing??

Living my old cuban dream

so many places to sit!!

Casa Yuma is a hotel located about 25 minutes outside of Puerto Escondido proper. It’s on a beautiful secluded beach, with waves big enough for surfers to ride during the mornings and afternoons (and for swimmers to get destroyed by waves, if you’re a strong swimmer and if that’s your thing).

want to change where you rot? here’s a bed!!

Even if swimming in the ocean isn’t your thing, it doesn’t matter; they have a huge pool for swimming and lounging all day and where staff bring you drinks poolside. They have loungers that face the ocean with umbrellas that close, loungers behind the pool that are mostly shaded, chairs facing the ocean so you can feel like an old man watching the sea, and a separate area with daybeds that are in front of the beach bar. They really did nail the pool/beach rot vibe.

most of the time it felt like our own resort??

we literally got mad when we saw other people (rare occurance)

And when you’re done swimming for the day, you can sit in their conversation pit to watch the most beautiful sunset you’ve ever seen in your life. Seriously, I’ve seen a lot of sunsets, and this is at least top 3, if not the best. And the fact that there’s a conversation pit on a beach?? I thought those were only in Californian homes from the 70’s.

this sunset are you kidding me?!

the conversation pit was the perfect place to drink an entire bottle of wine

And even though Casa Yuma can set up a restaurant reservation in Puerto Escondido and the transportation you need simply via a text to their front desk concierge, there’s really no reason to eat anywhere other than their on-site restaurant. The food is THAT good.

The breakfast, lunch, dinner, and appetizers are all incredible, with the fish tacos and the Oaxacan Shrimp dishes being our absolute favorites. We ordered them multiple times and I actually DRANK the sauce that the shrimp was mixed in because it was so good and because I’m a monster. We went into Puerto Escondido for one dinner and we regretted leaving the hotel because nothing was as good as the restaurant at Casa Yuma.

the perfect little fruit & granola bowl with fresh squeezed orange juice

the tuna tartare and chicken salads were also a fan fave

huevos divorciados (divorced eggs, something i can relate to, since my mom has been married five times)

this is a screenshot from a video of the AMAZING shrimp we ate (that’s why it looks weird but it was SO GOOD i drank the sauce right off the plate)

When you book, make sure you book the continental breakfast, which includes a fruit bowl, bread, homemade jams, and coffee or juice. Don’t worry though – if you’re still hungry after that, eat one of their many breakfast add-on options.

And if you’re looking for beach drinks, the onsite bar is open all day and can make fresh juices, fresh juices you can add vodka to, and mezcalitas in addition to all of their signature and traditional cocktails. I drank so many Old Cubans I’m pretty sure I am now partly an old Cuban man.

we may have kept the bar open during our stay (we spent a lot of time here or ordering drinks from here)

started with coffee

moved to green juice (to pretend i didn’t drink mostly alcohol)

After a long hard day of day drinking, getting crushed by waves, eating until you’re too bloated to move, napping, and then watching the sunset before dinner, you can retreat to your room, which, shocker! is also an incredible oasis.

stairs outside of our rooftop terrace king room

view of the mountains from our terrace

view of the ocean from our roof

We initially booked their Standard King room, which likely would have been perfect for us, but we were super happy that we were upgraded to a Rooftop Terrace King when we arrived, so we had our own private rooftop terrace which overlooked the ocean and the mountains. Another point for their customer service.

the bed was SO COMFY and they changed the duvet daily which was so cute!!

The room itself was so gorgeous, with a super comfortable king bed, beautiful details, and a large tiled shower that was perfect for a post-beach, slightly-sunburned rinse. In addition to our private rooftop terrace where we drank mezcal under the stars, we had a little backyard garden as well. It wasn’t a cramped room either; we had plenty of space to spread out and the wifi was fast enough to stream videos and work remotely if needed (I did not).

the on-site beach restaurant is the best place to eat in puerto escondido

And look, the property and food and location can be 10/10, but over the past 15 years of staying at incredible stays around the world, the one thing I’ve realized that a hotel can have that can really set itself apart from the rest, is the staff – and Casa Yuma exceeded our expectations. Like, in ways I didn’t even realize?? The fact that I could text them leading up to our stay was amazing; they set up a taxi, a mezcal tour, answered any questions we had, set up reservations and taxis, and helped me extend my stay for another night (because, in a surprise to no one, I didn’t want to leave).

can you BELIEVE that the one area i got burnt on my face is where my cowlick bang betrayed me?!

the perfect place to watch the waves, beach dogs, sunsets, and surfers

To add to the ease and convenience, everything was just charged to the card that I left when I arrived, so I could really turn my brain off, something I’m really good at but rarely get a chance to do. Of course, we made sure to have extra cash on hand to tip the staff and taxi drivers. We read that 10% is standard, but my “In” for 2025 and beyond is over-tipping when you can, so we did.

This hotel was just perfect for a 3 (...then 4) night stay. I loved it so much, I convinced my friends to come back here in May, and I truly can’t wait to go. This is in no way sponsored, I just LOVE this hotel and it deserves more attention, as much as I loved how private it felt.

our private little mezcal tour

via a translator, we learned about the traditional & modern ways to make mezcal in oaxaca

Also! The mezcal tour nearby, even though it was off the highway, was super interesting and fun and was only about an hour excursion in total. It was $50 for two people and definitely worth it.

even the bathroom area is so cool???

If you wind up going there, tell them I sent you! Although, they may only know me as “Mr. Lorenz”; since my first name is Alex, people in other countries typically assume I’m a dude and I rarely correct them.
